Amen. A column/blog is different than a magazine article, which is different than an essay, which is different than a book.

When I landed my first column in a local newspaper, I learned a very fast and hard lesson about how to craft a story that successfully arced and landed in 400-500 words. It was a humor column too, so trying to tell a joke or make people laugh in that small space was no easy feat, but Krugman is correct: there's no better way to learn to edit your work.

We've taken to doing 10 minute team meetings with hard stops. Dan Reshef puts a simple timer on the projector. Thus far, it's worked out really well.

Have you heard of Mike Monteiro's idea for meeting tokens? At the beginning of the week, every employee is given a certain number of tokens, each worth 15 minutes of one colleague's time. Want to have an all-hands meeting for two hours? You better have the tokens for it!

Kathryn,

Currently the class that we are running at the Times is devoted to helping people start up their blogs, get their first posts going and connecting with other bloggers who are writing the same things.

I will keep that in mind as we look towards developing out future iterations of our blog classes.
